Finding Your Financial Anchor: Could a Fixed or Fixed Indexed Annuity Secure Your Retirement? Meet the Fixed Annuity (FA)

Meet the Fixed Annuity: Predictability is the Name of the

A fixed annuity (FA) is perhaps the most straightforward type. It’s an insurance contract that promises to pay a guaranteed interest rate on contributions for a specified period.9 Think of it as being similar in concept to a Certificate of Deposit (CD) offered by a bank, but issued by an insurance company.5 Like CDs, FAs offer principal protection and a specified, guaranteed return.28 However, there are key differences. FAs typically offer tax-deferred growth on earnings, unlike CDs where interest is usually taxed annually.9 Because FAs often involve longer commitment periods than typical CDs, insurers may offer higher interest rates.28

Crucially, the comparison to CDs, while helpful for understanding the basic concept of safety and fixed returns, should not obscure the significant differences. FAs lack FDIC insurance, relying instead on the issuing insurer’s financial health.5 They are also generally much less liquid than CDs, often featuring long surrender periods with substantial penalties for early withdrawal.1

With an FA, the insurance company assumes the investment risk.22 The insurer invests the premiums received, primarily in high-quality fixed-income investments like corporate and government bonds, aiming to generate returns sufficient to meet the guaranteed interest payments and make a profit.9

The interest rate structure in an FA typically involves:

  • An Initial Guaranteed Rate: This rate is fixed for a specific period stated in the contract, often several years.9
  • A Renewal Rate: After the initial guarantee period ends, the insurer sets a new interest rate, usually annually. This rate can change but is guaranteed not to fall below a minimum rate specified in the contract.9 This minimum floor provides some protection against sharply falling rates, but the potential for rate changes after the initial term introduces some uncertainty.
  • Multi-Year Guarantee Annuities (MYGAs): A specific type of FA that addresses the renewal rate uncertainty. MYGAs guarantee a fixed interest rate for the entire contract term, typically ranging from 3 to 10 years.9 This offers longer-term predictability, often at a competitive initial rate, appealing to those who prioritize rate certainty over the full duration.
